BIOGRAPHIES
INTRODUCTION

In this unit the student will increase his/her writings skills by using techniques when writing a biography. He/she needs to keep in mind Simple Past Tense and Past Tense Continuous when writing a biogrphy. He/she also needs time expressions usually used with past forms. In addition, the student will learn how to use some linking devices to add strength and coherence to the biography.

After some years working biographies to apply past tenses: simple past tense, past continuous, present perfect, and past perfect, I present some new strategies and activities to lead students to produce writing papers.
What level should biographies be taught? A2 or B1, or B2? Well, I have used "biography" as a strategy in every level, even A1. In fact, I use autobiography because it permits the students to write and talk about themselves. In terms of structues and grammar issues, biography and autobiography permit any tense, adjectives and adverbs, as well as prepostions of place, time and movement.

STRATEGIES

Videos, documentaries and films are a great audiovisual tool  to be used in the classroom since it uses actual information taken from historical events occurred in the past. This could lead the students to focus on the facts, the events, avoiding a grammatical focus.
Here you find a good example of a documentary, "Henry VIII The Most Iconic King of English History (SubtĂtulos)" found in youtube

This video provides a lot of information to be worked in class in different ways. Here I propose some of them.
  1. Identify the different event in King's life and create a time line to set down the events using past tense
  2. Identify cause-and-effect  based on king's decisions, then build a chart in which decisions, cause and effect are presented.
  3. Give reasons why king's life was: tragic, or complex, or exciting, or dramatic.
  4. Create a  profile based on the description done in the documentary. Take into account that describing a person could imply using: character, personality, mood, believes, even attitudes, actions and reactions.
  5. Write a list of food the king used to eat, add quantities. (use uncountable nouns and quantifiers)
  6. Determine the cultural issues that led the king to act so.
Here you have a second example that could be used for a lower level.

You coud listen to the recorded text and:
  1. Take notes to test yourself how much you understand.
  2.  As you listen to the recorded text, you can ask some questions.
  3. You can create a cause-and-consequence chart to write them down as you identify them while listening the recorded text
  4. A time line can be created with the information given in the recorded text
Now, here you have a file which can be used with the activities proposed above. The PDF file has two different activities for you to work on.

A DIFFERENT LINK
ACTIVITIES:

1- check the following link in which you will find a biography, so skim it for general ideas and general structure of the biography. Watch the video and take notes about Christopher Colombus.
Christopher Columbus Biographie
Here you have a new link. This time shows a great leader born in USA. Check the structure of the biography: number of paragraphs, number of sentences in each paragraph, linking devices, purpose of each paragraph.
ROSA PARK

2- Reread the biography to focus on the structure of the paragraph: How many sentences does each paragraph have? Where is the main idea placed? what is the main purpose of the paragraph? Does the paragraph present details or example to support the main idea? Is there a conclusion? Is there any linking device?
3- Choose a paragraph and look for:
  • Past tense: Identify types of verbs and endings
  • Examples or detail
  • Identify the purpose of each paragraph.
